Skill Development Programme

[For Masons – 04/09/2018 & For Civil Engineering Students-05/09/2018]


One Day Skill Development Programme was organized by Saranathan Civil Engineering Students Association (SCESA) in association with UltraTech Cement Ltd. for Masons on 04/09/2018 and for Civil Engineering Students-05/09/2018.

On behalf of the Management, Principal, Staff and Students of Saranathan College of Engineering Dr. G.Dhanalakshmi, Prof. and Head, Department of Civil Engineering, welcomed the gathering.

Presidential Address was given by Dr. D.Valavan, Principal. In his speech, he mentioned about the Value of Skilled Labours, Responsibilities of Students during their College Life, Career Opportunities for Civil Students, Masons involvement in attending this Programme and various UltraTech activities with the institutions.

Er. K. Eswaran, Senior Manager, UltraTech Cement Ltd., delivered the Inaugural Address. He motivated the students by mentioning various QUOTES and various stages of life.

Dr. G. Dhanalakshmi, Prof. and Head, Department of Civil Engineering, explained about the "Laboratory Tests for Construction Materials and Various Instruments used for Testing".

Er. M. Arun, Technical Officer, UltraTech Cement Ltd., explained about the do’s and don’ts in Construction, Quality Control of Materials and Construction, Systematic procedure which is not followed at site, the causes of Poor Workmanship, Legal Issues, Reason for Accidents at site, Safety in Construction and such other points using Power Point Presentation. He showed some videos on Concreting work.

Group of Masons separately constructed a prototype model and all the participants discussed about the Quality of Construction Materials and correct procedure for Masonry Work, Checking Levels, and Checking Verticality, Mix Ratio for Mortar, difference between River Sand and M-Sand.

After Field Work, Valedictory function for Masons was arranged. During this function, Masons shared their Feedback about the Programme and they received their Certificates.

On 5th September, a session on Mix Proportioning was handled by Er. K. Subash, Technical, UltraTech Cement Ltd. Hands-on-Training was given to the Students.

Technical Quiz on “Mix Proportioning” was conducted to the Students by Er. R. Suresh, Regional Head(Technical), UltraTech Cement Ltd. After the Quiz session, "Building Marking" for a small plot was practiced by the Civil Engineering Students. Students experienced the errors in measurements while marking. Line Formation, Checking the Alignments, Location of Doors, Windows and Ventilators, and Vaastu details were explained by Er. R. Suresh, Er. M. Arun and Mr. Gunasekaran (Mason).

During the closing session, students shared their experiences, difference between theory and practical and importance of various code books and other norms and standards.

Mr. S.M. Ajithkumar, President, SCESA, thanked the Management, Principal, Senior Manager, Technical Head, Technical Officers and other Experts of UltraTech Cement Ltd. Company and other members who were helped for arranging this programme. He specially thanked all the Masons for their involvement in attending this Programme. Mr. Arunkumar, III year student read out one Kavithai about Teachers and on behalf of students he wished the Teachers-05/09/2018(Teachers Day).
